Director: Hany Abu-Assad.
Starring: Tawfeek Barhom, Qais Atallah, Hiba Atallah. Netherlands/UK/Palestine 2015. 99 mins. Arabic with English subtitles.

Academy Award-nominated director Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now, Omar) directs this heart-warming and expertly pitched feel-good story based on the life of singer Mohammed Assaf (Qais Atallah, Barhom), a young Palestinian who smuggled himself out of the Gaza Strip to compete in Egyptian Pop Idol and is now a massive pop star.

Assaf’s story is one of immense talent, developed from childhood, which was combined with an astonishing commitment and determination to succeed. It makes a fitting subject for a film which at once echoes the glamour and rags-to-riches trajectory of Slumdog Millionaire whilst also evoking the grit and realism of Arabic cinema from the likes of Makhmalbaf and Kiarostami.
