We were privileged to welcome Steve Cutts and Dr Nick Maynard to Brighton on April 17th, 2026. The meeting was in part a fundraiser for the inspiring work of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP): Steve is MAP’s Chief Executive, and Nick is Chair of MAP’s Board of Trustees as well as a decorated surgeon who has led several medical missions to Gaza with MAP since October 2023.
The meeting was also an important opportunity to hear more about MAP’s work in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Lebanon, and to hear Nick’s first-hand account of Israel’s appalling war on healthcare in Gaza – just one of many dimensions of the ongoing genocide.
We must warn you: this video recording does not make for easy viewing. In particular, Nick’s accounts, and his photos and video diaries – some of which were dispatched from operating theatres in hospitals under constant bombardment – were almost unbearable for many of us in the audience. But everyone agreed that it was essential for us to see and hear the truth in the face of denial and misinformation on the part of government, media and Israel’s PR apparatus.
Steve’s presentation was also moving and illuminating. He spoke about what makes MAP’s work distinctive, focusing on its impact in Lebanon, the occupied West Bank and Gaza – not least the fact that almost all of the courageous health workers on MAP’s team in Gaza are Gazans; many have themselves suffered multiple bereavements and personal injuries.
We raised an impressive £1100 for MAP on the night, but we left the meeting enriched by what we heard and saw.
