Keith Taylor, MEP for Southeast England, has issued a public statement expressing his “disappointment” that a zionist rally “for israel and peace” has been called and will be taking place in his constituency. His statement is reproduced below.
STATEMENT FROM KEITH TAYLOR, MEMBER OF EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT REGARDING “ISRAEL AND PEACE” DEMONSTRATION, BRIGHTON, AUGUST 17 2014
“I am disappointed that this event wastes an opportunity to rally public support for a just and sustainable peace in the region and an end to violence on all sides.
The organisers and sponsors of the event are outspoken in their unquestioning defence and justification of the actions of the Israeli Government, even where these have been disproportionate and in breach of international law. It is noteworthy that the two listed speakers are well known for their unwavering support for Israel’s military operations, rendering any even-handed discussion of the conflict in Gaza (and Israel’s role within it) impossible.
I support any genuine attempt that seeks to bring a secure and lasting peace to the Middle East which is inclusive of all views, but sadly the “Israel and Peace” event, in my view, is no such genuine attempt to galvanize support for a peaceful resolution.”
Editors’ Note
