The Labour Party is having its annual conference in Brighton this year. In view of recent events it’s likely to be an interesting few days!
For many years the Labour Party has paid G4S to provide security at its conferences, and this year’s annual conference in Brighton is no exception. The case against G4S is unanswerable. Through its subsidiary G4S Israel, the company is deeply involved in security and military operations in israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, most notably in incarceration facilities for Palestinian political prisoners. G4S is therefore deeply complicit in war crimes and abuses of human rights carried out by israel. Learn more here and here and here and here. And this is not to mention the myriad other examples of the company’s flagrant disregard for human rights in its activities in security services, welfare to work programmes, detention centres, prisons, and asylum seeker housing.
The national STOP G4S Campaign has lobbied the Labour Party vigorously on this shameful alliance for many years. There is considerable opposition to the alliance within the party and in the trade union movement, but not enough. We intend to remind conference delegates in Brighton why the party must end its unethical collusion with israeli war crimes and human rights violations.
We’ll be protesting outside the Brighton Centre at 4.30pm on Sunday 27 September as delegates leave the venue after the first day of the conference. Further details will be announced in the next few days.
