Please join BHPSC for a showing of this important short film, ‘Shanshula’ (36 mins), made by Gaza-born film-maker Musheir El Farra in the run-up to, and during, Israel’s latest genocidal assault on the strip.
The film will be followed by an in-person Q&A session with the director.
A documentary about the lives of Gaza’s Palestinian fishing community, ‘Shanshula’ refers to a local fishing-dialect term for a type of net used in the strip. Interviews were filmed at Gaza’s port between Spring 2022 and October 2024.
The film illustrates the community’s daily suffering living under siege, with regular attacks by the Israeli Navy either killing or physically disabling people simply trying to feed their families.
‘Shanshula’ also tells the story of Madleen, a remarkable woman and one of very few Palestinian fisherwomen in Gaza.
BACKGROUND
Musheir El Farra was in Khan Younis as Israel began to rain bombs down immediately after the events of 7th October, 2023. The film closes with footage of the start of Israel’s genocidal assault on the captive population. It also records the forceful evacuation of the fishing community from the north of Gaza to the south.
‘Shanshula’ is a cooperation between Sheffield PSC and the Palestinian Vanguard Station, a local film-making team who provide training for youngsters in journalism. Their Khan Younis premises were destroyed by Israeli bombing in January 2024.
Musheir El Farra is a political activist, writer, public speaker and film maker, originally from Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip. He is now Chair of Sheffield PSC.
He’s the published author of “Gaza, When the Sky Rained White Fire” and other books in Arabic.
Musheir’s humanitarian work includes founding and coordinating the “Sheffield Gaza Emergency Relief Fund”. He has also been co-coordinator of Sheffield PSC’s Children’s Projects in the Gaza Strip since 1995.
* All donations on the night will go to Musheir’s Emergency Fund – so if possible please bring cash and give generously.
