Mohammed El Halabi has been imprisoned by Israel for 5 years accused of stealing millions of dollars for Hamas – yet two audits said no money is missing! |
We’re pleased to announce that we’ll be joined by three special speakers:
Khalil El Halabi – Mohammed’s father (see Khalil’s introduction below)
Asa Winstanley – Electronic Intifada
Andrew Feinstein – Former ANC MP under Nelson Mandela
Mohammed El Halabi worked for international aid organisation World Vision in Gaza. He was arrested in July 2016 by Israel. The charges could not have been more serious: transferring $7.2 million dollars a year from World Vision, an American charity, to Hamas. This despite the fact that World Vision’s total budget over this time in Gaza was a fraction of this amount.
The Canadian and Australian governments immediately froze the money they were giving to World Vision and the Australian Government set up its own audit. World Vision conducted its own audit to review what had gone on, employing DLA Piper and Deloittes.
The conclusion of both audits? That no money was missing. According to Australia’s ABC ‘there’s no evidence he stole money, but this Palestinian aid worker remains in an Israeli jail’.
Mohammed’s case was covered in detail by the Guardian in August of this year.
And Mohammed’s father Khalil – one of our speakers on Wednesday – has also written about his son’s case in the Guardian just last month.
Tony Greenstein has also written about the case on his blog.

From Mohammed’s father Khalil, one of our speakers on Wednesday –
My name is Khalil al Halabi I am retired educator where I spent my career working with fellow Palestinian refugees at the UNRWA agency in Gaza. One of my last projects was to create a human rights curriculum for Palestinian children. I remember fondly showing our efforts to the visit former US President Jimmy Carter. I am speaking to you in regards to a case of clear injustice by the Israeli government towards my son Mohammad. My son was working as the director of a Christian charity, World Vision when suddenly in 2016 he was arrested on his return from Jerusalem. He was questioned in a very difficult way for 55 days during which he has lost part of his hearing. The Israelis accuse him of diverting $50 million to Hamas even though his spending check writing limit is a mere $300 and his entire office’s ceiling is $15,000 which has to be approved by headquarters. The Israelis have tried to make a deal with him from the first few months that he admits to something and they would release him. He refused because he has done nothing wrong. Today he has entered his sixth year and after 166 useless court sessions in which no serious evidence was presented yet he is still in Israeli jail. |
