We tell the BBC in Brighton: “Tell the truth about Gaza!”

Dozens of pro-Palestine protestors demonstrated outside (and inside) the BBC’s Brighton offices in Queen’s Road on Thursday July 17th.

Chanting “BBC – Shame on you!”, we explained to the rush-hour passers-by that the BBC is complicit in the current brutal assault on Gaza, through its one-sided reporting. The BBC relies exclusively on the Israeli narrative of “self-defence” as the background context for what is in truth collective punishment of the Palestinian people – widely acknowledged to be a war crime under international law.  bbc01

People who depend on the BBC for their news have no way of knowing that the so-called “conflict” is not one of two equal sides slugging it out. Gaza has no army, air force, or navy, while Israel possess one of the strongest militaries in the world. Israel is bombing a refugee population – Palestinians who were made refugees when they were forced from their land in1948 in order to create Israel. We told the BBC:

When you portray the occupier as the victim, and the occupied as the aggressor, we would like to remind you that resistance to occupation is a right under international law. And we would like you to remember that Israel’s occupation, siege and collective punishment of Gaza is not.

bbc02 A group of us briefly occupied the BBC shop to ensure that local management understood the degree of anger and frustration over the BBC’s complete capitulation to zionist pressure. The BBC’s charter, requiring impartiality, is laughable.

We handed out hundreds of leaflets on the pavement advertising the mass vigil and rally in central Brighton on Sunday, starting at 1pm at the Old Steine War Memorial.
