National Day of Action against Sainsburys

June 29, 2015

As part of the National Day of Action against Sainsburys, BHPSC members and supporters took to the streets on Saturday for a rolling picket of central Brighton, to protest Sainsburys continuing refusal to adhere to their own ethical trading policy and to cease selling produce from the illegally occupied West Bank.

Accompanied by an eye-catching display of Sainsburys’ orange carrier bags carrying the message “Boycott Israeli Apartheid”, 30 minutes was spent outside each of the two stores on Western Road, giving out flyers and getting lots of supportive hoots from passing cars.

Interestingly, our very own personal police shadow was joined at the first store by a van full of cops. Apparently they had been brought down to observe the picket as part of a training exercise!

After a handover to fresh bodies at the Clocktower, the stores in North Street and James Street were then paid a visit. We also had a little display of the types of fruit & veg for shoppers to avoid (kindly donated by Taj) as well as a great graphic placard highlighting the 729 code (it denotes Israel as country of origin). Letters to the respective managers were handed in at all the stores.

The only discord was a passing woman who shouted that “none of you have been there!” In fact, this year, probably over 20 activists from Brighton have been, or are currently in Palestine, and they witness first-hand the injustices of the Israeli Occupation that companies like Sainsburys are complicit in.

A really successful day – a big thanks to all those who helped prepare props and to all those who came out to support.
