This event is part of a week-long city-wide programme of activities, commemorating the second anniversary of the start of the genocide in Gaza. For full details, see the Events section of our website.

We are pleased to welcome Sabri Jiryis, the esteemed Palestinian historian, lawyer and activist, joining us online from Occupied Palestine. Sabri will be in conversation with Louis Allday, a historian, writer and founding editor of Liberated Texts.

Louis and Sabri will be discussing Sabri’s study of the origins and development of the Zionist movement,The Foundations of Zionism. First published in Arabic in two parts in the 1970s and 1980s by the PLO’s Palestine Research Centre, the book has been translated into English for the first time by Sabri’s daughter, Fida Jiryis. This edition, published in a collaboration between Liberated Texts and Ebb Books, includes a newly written conclusion, in which Sabri reconsiders the Zionist project 100 years on from the Balfour Declaration and amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

This meeting, in part a fascinating discussion with a veteran of the Palestinian struggle, and in part a book launch, will be a vital opportunity to explore the deep roots of the current and ongoing genocide in Gaza – roots that extend not only to 1948, but right back to the founding of the Zionist movement in the 1880s.

Copies of The Foundations of Zionism, published on October 7th, will be on sale at the end of the meeting. The book may also be purchased from the publisher.

Please note that we plan to make a prompt start at 7pm, as it will be 9pm in Palestine.
